STORYBOX builds on the power of public spaces to connect communities and inspire creative collaborations.
STORYBOX is on a mission to inspire creative connections through the power of storytelling and civic media in public spaces.
Expanding the potentials for digital storytelling and exhibitions in outdoor spaces, the program activates creative collaborations between precinct partners, custodians, communities, artists, storytellers and more.
Through our programs we aim to build a stronger foundation for community resilience, everyday creativity, and care for places and habitats.

STORYBOX was created in 2020 with a simple provocation: Could we rethink outdoor media as digital portals for shared storytelling and creativity? Could we invite partners to connect with audiences as citizen-storytellers, not consumers? What stories might then be shared?
Discover the story of STORYBOX!
STORYBOX is the creation of Dr. Sarah Barns and Michael Killalea of Studio ESEM, a digital arts practice based in Sydney, Australia.
The platform builds on research and strategy insights on digital placemaking & platform urbanism by Dr. Sarah Barns, working alongside creative director Michael Killalea. The technology to deliver the programs was supported by AV engineer Leif Wilson and Guerilla Constructions. Together, the team have been iterating and growing STORYBOX since 2020, building on over 40 outdoor placemaking programs delivered in communities since 2013.
“STORYBOX allows us to connect with a wider audience through a really engaging and striking medium.”
Kye Meurer, Head of Marketing for Bangarra Dance Company
We create community programs in partnership with First Nations custodians, schools, universities and cultural organisations.
